## **Lido Lend Feature Highlight #3: Turbulence Controls**

Today we’re excited to share another core Lido Lend feature, ‘Turbulence Controls’.

Turbulence Controls are a set of mechanisms designed to mitigate the impact of severe collateral events, including hacked or stolen collateral, dirty-flow/dusting attacks, and liquidity crunches. They complement other systems, including the Guardian Security Council, to deliver a maximally resilient decentralized lending environment.

**Understanding Turbulence Controls**

Lido Lend is designed for lenders who are long-term, passive holders of on-chain assets looking for rewards, without exposure to hidden risks. The major failure modes across DeFi originate from edge case scenarios, including liquidity crunches and malicious attacks. Existing lending solutions typically address these failure modes via two broad approaches: either contracts are immutable, with risk managed via curators, or through governance controls, including market halting.

Built on a fork of Morpho Blue, Lido Lend introduces the concept of a ‘Market Controller,’ actioned via a smart contract (on a per market basis) which can allow or restrict key market actions, but cannot spend or move user tokens, or act on behalf of user accounts. The Market Controller is designed to protect lending market participants via two intervention mechanisms, ‘Market Freeze,’ and ‘Market Pause’, controlled via committees and the Lido DAO.

‘Freeze’ is a limited restriction that stops new borrowing while allowing markets to otherwise function as normal – borrowers can repay and unwind positions, and lenders can withdraw. During a market freeze, borrowers with open debt can’t withdraw collateral until the debt is repaid, and newly supplied collateral doesn’t finish maturing while the market is frozen. A freeze is activated by the Risk Steward Committee, while unfreezing happens via the Lido DAO.

‘Pause’ is an emergency action that blocks every market action that passes through the Controller, including repayment and settlement, for a limited period. This fixed-duration pause can be triggered by the Circuit Breaker Committee, but the committee has no power to extend or lift the pause. A longer pause is only possible through Lido DAO Dual Governance.

The self-custodial nature of Lido Lend remains intact, as none of these turbulence controls nor the Guardian Security Council afford the ability to to take custody of or move any user assets. Turbulence Controls are also enacted per-market, not across Lido Lend as a whole, to minimize impact when deployed.

This piecemeal approach, as opposed to a global market halt, protects active market participants from further contamination and allows for effective, sustainable risk management across adverse scenarios. Taken together with Fallback Exits and the Guardian Security Council, Turbulence Controls provide Lido Lend market participants with a range of tools to respond to severe market or oracle events.

**What’s Next?**

In the coming days, Lido Lend contributors will be sharing more details regarding governance decisions, technical specifications and specific timelines tied to launch of Lido Lend.
