Community sentiment around raising the gas limit?

I’m HyungGi from DSRV, DSRV agree to increase the gas limit to 36M. We increased the gas limit to 36M for our testnet validators to ensure it works well with our system, and we will gradually roll it out to the mainnet. We use several different clients, so more testing is needed.

At SenseiNode, we are committed to staying ahead of Ethereum’s scaling needs and contributing to the network’s long-term sustainability. That’s why we’ve decided to upgrade all our clients to a 36 million gas limit. This decision aligns with the broader Ethereum community’s vision, as highlighted by voices like Vitalik Buterin and Dankrad Feist, advocating for a modest yet meaningful increase in the gas block limit to improve transaction throughput.

Increasing the gas limit from 30 million to 36 million represents a 20% boost in Layer 1 capacity, allowing the network to handle more transactions per block. Research suggests this could lead to a 10-30% reduction in transaction fees on Layer 1, directly benefiting users and developers by improving Ethereum’s affordability and efficiency.

By proactively upgrading our infrastructure, SenseiNode aims to support the Ethereum ecosystem’s growth while ensuring our clients are ready to handle the evolving demands of the network. We believe this move is not just a technical adjustment but a strategic step towards a more scalable, accessible, and robust Ethereum.

At the same time, we will closely monitor the increase in resources consumed by our servers as a result of this upgrade. We understand that keeping node operation affordable for solo stakers is essential for decentralization, and we will take these resource considerations into account for future upgrades to ensure that Ethereum remains accessible to all participants in the network.

@Izzy are you happy with the move to 36MM for lido node operators? As it’s going to be the default in a number of execution clients we are likely to see this become somewhat more adopted over time (although nowadays a lot of gas limits are set by proposer configs and passed to MEV relays without the execution client being involved, so it may not have as much impact as perhaps is expected).

Personally, yes, I don’t see an issue in raising to 36M at this time!

Indeed, because a lot of blocks are being produced via the out of protocol PBS pipeline, Node Operators will need to take care that the limits are raised on both EL and CL side so there’s no odd “edge cases” when blocks have to be built locally but the gaslimit expectations in CL and EL don’t match, or behavior where the relay registration is for a gas limit lower than the allowable block gaslimit based on most recent blocks.

At Simply Staking, we support the move toward a 36 million gas limit as an important step to enhance Ethereum’s usability and scalability, given the network’s current stable and mature state.

We plan to implement this limit gradually across all the clients we operate, ensuring the change does not introduce excessive resource usage or other unintended issues within our stack.

Currently, 6 node operators have announced their decision to increase the gas limit to 36 million. The changes are being implemented either for all validators or through a gradual rollout process. The operators supporting this adjustment are:

  • ConsenSys
  • DSRV
  • Kiln
  • Prysm Team at Offchain Labs
  • SenseiNode
  • Simply Staking

In the last 7 days, approximately 6.94% of block proposed by node operators participated in Lido were with increased gas limit.

Nethermind had started the gas limit increase process across its Lido fleet to 36M. We had already raised it to 35M before on a non-Lido validators in November last year. The gas limit increase rollout across the Lido Curated and DVT fleet will finish in January.

A41 has conducted an internal review and initiated the process of increasing the gas limit to 36M.
We support a gradual approach to raising the gas limit and consider analyzing the impact of increasing it to 36M as the first step.
We will continuously monitor the effects of this parameter change to ensure there are no negative impacts on the network.

This is Corlin from ParaFi Technologies. We support the 36M gas limit change; it’s an easy win to boost Ethereum capacity, supporting more efficient markets by making more total transactions available per block. We’re planning to roll out that limit increase over the next couple of weeks. It’s great to see Lido NOs leading the charge on this increase!

Stakely has been testing on Holesky for a month, and we have found no issues with increasing the gas limit to 36 million, so today we have configured our Lido validators to 36M. We believe this is a good decision to improve user experience and reduce transaction costs.
