Lido Node Operator & Validator Metrics

In general, client diversity and specifically validator client diversity is an important aspect of decentralization and resilience of the Ethereum network, and a lot of work has been conducted by various teams to attempt to depict the current situation of the network, including: stereum’s client diversity watch, Michael Sproul’s fingerprinting work, Miga Labs’ great insights based on their network crawler, and ChainSafe’s nodewatch.

As both a part of our commitment to decentralization, as well as our efforts to identify and minimize risk related to validator operators, Lido is happy to publish its first node and validator metrics report. Lido has set out to:
(a) identify its current node and validator client footprint on the network, and
(b) together with our NOs and the community, align on targets and steps to achieve these targets in the medium term (6-12 months).

Aside from goals related to client diversity, we will work towards making the data gathering and reporting process more robust, and are looking for community feedback & support to:

  • Expand our reporting to other networks that Lido is present on (e.g. Terra, Solana)
  • Expand the reported metrics based on what the greater community finds useful
  • Improve the data gathering process and increase the frequency of data reporting
  • Make data more easily available

If you have any input on any of the above, you’re welcome to share either here or on our Discord!

As of Q3, 2022, we created the Lido VaNOM app, which will be kept up to date on a quarterly basis, but stand-alone reports will also be made available and appended below.

The report was assembled based on point in time data gathered from Lido Ethereum Node Operators during October 2021. The data was self-submitted by the Node Operators.

Thank you, that is great work!

Agreed, thank you for this @Izzy, great stuff!

Happy to see Lido leading the pack publishing numbers like this

This is so good. It helps us think through how we are contributing to diversity. Also, helps us factor in what internal tasks we would need to prioritize to strengthen Lido and Ethereum.

We’ve been late in getting these reports out, but have now caught up thanks to the hard work by @sabrychiaa . In the meantime we’re working on an alternative mechanism to deliver this data and insights that will both be simpler to update / maintain and give readers more interactive options to compare and contrast data over time.

Thank you for these reports and the transparency @sabrychiaa @Izzy !

Do you think it would be possible to have the name of the different Node Operators (if they are public/regulated entities) and the breakdown of how many validators each of them are running in this alternative mechanism?

Sure, although this information is all public and on-chain (see https://operators.lido.fi/ as an example) and in the Lido Operators Database of our Operator Portal.

Thank you for sharing, I didn’t know about operators.lido.fi !

@satBalwyn also shared RatedV0 which gives a lot of information as well.

Hello, we have recently considered cooperation with lido ethereum, and now we want to join goerli
test network node operator first. How can we apply to be a node operator in goerli? Your opertor portal is not useful now.

Currently the testnet is only used as a testing bed for operators whose applications have been accepted by the DAO so that they can get familiar with the mechanism of the node operator registry and deposit functionality. You can contact the node operator management workstream via [email protected] for additional info.

The OP has been updated to include a link to the VaNOM app which contains all quarterly reports in one interactive app. Details about it can be found on the Lido blog!

Can you share the dataset? I’d like to know which operators are geographically located where, for server and jurisdiction.

Not currently, no, as not all NOs are currently comfortable with this information being shared, for a variety of reasons (and obviously sharing it for some makes it easier to deduce the rest).
