LEGO Grant Proposal: Atupa Unified Execution Monitoring for stETH Infrastructure

Summary

This proposal recommends that the Lido DAO sponsors the development of the Atupa Unified Execution Suite. Atupa is a high-performance Rust-native profiler designed to monitor and audit complex “Mixed-VM” transactions (Solidity + Stylus). By providing high-fidelity visibility into stETH’s execution path on L2s like Arbitrum, Atupa will enhance the protocol’s resilience and risk-monitoring capabilities for its largest integrations.

Introduction

As the liquid staking leader, Lido’s growth is increasingly tied to its resilience on Layer 2 ecosystems. However, new technical developments like Arbitrum Stylus (WASM) represent a “Visibility Black Hole” for current monitoring tools. Transactions that move between standard Solidity (EVM) and high-performance Rust (WASM) cannot be audited by standard tracers in a single contiguous journey. This opacity introduces hidden risks for stETH during cross-VM liquidations or complex facilitator logic.

Project Description: The Atupa Unified Suite

Atupa is a local-first, high-performance tracing engine built in Rust. Unlike specialized tracers, Atupa is designed for Unified Execution Visibility.

Key technical features include:

  • Mixed-VM Trace Stitching: Merging standard callTracer data with Arbitrum stylusTracer HostIOs to provide a 100% complete execution path.

  • Ink & Gas Analysis: Normalizing Stylus “Ink” and EVM “Gas” to identify performance bottlenecks in hybrid vaults.

  • Institutional Protocol Adapters: Pre-built logic for auditing Aave v3, GHO, and lending-market health specifically for stETH pairings.

Value to Lido DAO

Sponsoring Atupa aligns directly with Lido’s GOOSE-3 goals for “Protocol Resilience”:

  1. Enhanced Risk Observability: Provides the Lido Risk Council with the first “X-Ray” view for stETH integrations on Hybrid L2s.

  2. Early Regression Detection: Identifies execution-level inefficiencies or gas-spikes in wSTETH facilitators before they impact capital efficiency.

  3. Resilience Moat: Establishes a gold standard for transparency as the ecosystem moves toward high-performance Rust/WASM contract logic.

Milestones & Timeline (8 Weeks)

Milestone 1: The Nitro Unified Adapter (Week 1–4)

  • Deliverable: Integration of Arbitrum Nitro’s dual-trace architecture into the Atupa engine.

  • Outcome: A functional CLI tool (cargo-atupa) capable of stitching Solidity-WASM transitions.

Milestone 2: Lido Resilience Module (Week 5–8)

  • Deliverable: Specialized decoders for major stETH integration addresses (e.g., Aave v3 wstETH pool).

  • Outcome: Automated “Health Reports” and high-fidelity flamegraphs for stETH execution paths.
